Ambrosia salad, is a traditional dessert from the southern United States, as in Texas, Oklahoma or Alabama.
During the 70’s and 80’s this desert was very popular and even served in restaurants and ice cream shops.
Today this recipe is still prepared but it is more linked to special occasions such as Christmas or Thanksgiving.
Ambrosia fruit salad
The ambrosia salad originated in the last years of the 19th century, although it was in the 20th century when it became popular. This fruit salad that combined different types of textures wrapped in a creamy yogurt (or cream in some cases) enchanted the Americans.
Some variations are like those with grated coconut and nuts, a real ‘heat pump’. Clouds or marshmallows represent the surprise ingredients, for example, expects to find in a fruit salad-. It is very easy to prepare and without a doubt an original dessert that is very popular.
1 can of pineapple in syrup, 500 ml
250 g mandarin orange slices cut into pieces
10 clouds, marshmallows or marshmallows (these candies that are soft)
2 Greek yogurts
4 cherries or Maraschino cherries
1. Open a can of pineapple, set aside half a glass of the syrup and slice the pineapple. Peel the mandarins and do the same, cutting them into pieces. Put these two fruits in a bowl.
2. Alternatively, cut clouds or marshmallows into small pieces and combine them with pineapple and mandarins. Add syrup of pineapple and leave the mixture in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
3. Once time has passed, mix two Greek yogurts with fruits and clouds and decorate with some cherries (or strawberries or any red fruit).
A light version of this recipe can be achieved with pineapple light syrup or natural pineapple and instead of syrup use light pineapple juice. Sugar-free clouds are not easy to get, although they do exist. If you can’t find it, use normal clouds but less quantity.
Greek yogurt is more fatty, it can be replaced by creamy skimmed yogurt. These changes would give us a light ambrosia fruit salad.
